Base Building in Star Citizen 4.0.2: Deploying and Managing Pioneer Outposts

Base Building in Star Citizen is a feature planned for the future. This feature will allow the players to set up outposts, create settlements, and manage their resources. As of Star Citizen 4.0.2, this has not yet been launched in the game, the presentations from CitizenCon already have provided a clear picture of how this system is going to work. The deployment and management of Pioneer outposts are also expected to drop when this feature is released. Also, keep enough stock of aUEC, the in-game currency of Star Citizen to make smoother progress.

Base Building

As of Star Citizen 4.0.2, players are allowed to place temporary outposts by using shelters such as:

Anvil Centurion (Mule)

Provided by Anvil Aerospace, The Anvil Centurion is designed as a ground-based anti-aircraft (AA) vehicle instead of a base building. Its statistics are as follows:

  • Role: Anti-Air Defense

  • Manufacturer: Anvil Aerospace

  • Crew: 2 (Driver + Gunner)

  • Weaponry: four laser repeaters of size 4 by default

  • Shield: Medium ground vehicle shielding

  • Speed: Moderate (slower than Cyclone but faster than a Nova Tank)

  • Purpose: Defending Outposts, Landing zones, act as a convoy against enemies.

Ground Vehicles

Allowing players to explore planets, transport cargo, engage in combat, and defend bases, ground vehicles play an important role in Star Citizen. These vehicles are often transported in Landing ships and can also be categorized into two parts:

  • Combat Vehicles (include Nova Tank, Anvil Centurion, Anvil Spartan, and Tumbril Cyclone Series)

  • Transport & Utility Vehicles (Argo MPUV, RSI Ursa Rover and Dragonfly)

Landing Ships

In Star Citizen, these ships are crucial for delivering troops, vehicles, and supplies to their required destinations. Landing ships can also be divided into two categories:

Dropships

These dedicated ships act as troop transport and include Anvil Valkyrie, Aegis Redeemer, and Anvil Pisces whose medical variant is also available)

Multi-Role Landing Ships

These ships serve as Cargo & vehicles and include Drake Cutlass Black, Taurus, Aquilla, Crusader Hercules Starlifter, Drake Caterpillar and Drake Kraken which will soon be added to the game.

Underground Bunkers

Scattered across planets and moons, these underground bunkers serve as key locations for various missions including combat encounters and loot opportunities. There are several types of these bunkers which are operated by security forces, outlaws, or corporations, and some of them are listed below:

Star Citizen 4.0.2 Underground Bunkers

Security and Corporate Bunkers

These bunkers are owned by companies like Hurston Dynamics and Crusader Industries and are useful for lawful missions like eliminating outlaws and defending bunkers from attacks. These bunkers are also guarded by AI security forces.

Outlaw-Controlled Bunkers

Filled with NPC Criminals, these bunkers are often connected to criminal syndicates and include hostile environments where players complete bounty-hunting contracts which can also lead to illegal missions.

Loot and Exploration Bunkers

These bunkers are unmarked on the map which makes them good for scavengers as they are less frequented. Some of these bunkers might contain valuable loot in crated or on the bodies of NPC. These bunkers might have hazards like turrets or security drones so it's best to move with precaution.

Base Building (as expected this year)

According to CitizenCon 2954 presentations, base building will become a modular system, which means that players will be able to combine different structures to meet their preferences. Some modules that can be used to create customizable bases are listed below:

  • Power Plants (provides energy for the base)

  • Refineries (process mined resources from planets)

  • Storage Units (warehouse raw materials and goods)

  • Quarters (living areas for players and NPCs)

  • Defensive Systems (turrets along with shields)

  • Landing Pads (platforms that enable small to medium-sized ships to land)

Pioneer

Manufactured by Consolidated Outland, The Pioneer is a capital-class industrial ship designed for modular base construction. This was first announced at CitizenCon 2017 but has not been implemented yet as it is still in the building stage. Its available stats are listed below:

  • Size: Capital-class ship (one of the largest vessels)

  • Role: Mobile Base Constructor

  • Producer: Consolidated Outland

  • Crew Capacity: 10-14 (expected for proper functioning)

The Pioneer is not just a self-sufficient factory but it is a game changer for those who desire planetary control as it is capable of fabricating and deploying outposts directly onto the planetary surfaces, unlike other ships that can simply transport the structures. As to what the Pioneer can build, it can fabricate and deploy any module from the list given above. The basic construction process includes the following steps:

  • Land Selection (choose a location, that might require a land claim beacon)

  • Resource Collection (Pioneer processes raw materials to build structures)

  • Fabrication (Construct modular outpost components)

  • Deployment (the ship finally deploys completed modules on the surface)

Every coin has two sides, so the Pioneer ship also has its limitations and they are listed below:

Expensive – Due to the Pioneer being a capital ship, it requires massive investment.

Large Quantity of Resources – It is likely that the ship requires large amounts of raw materials to even function efficiently let alone build outposts.

Vulnerable – Since the Pioneer ship needs to land on a planet to build, it is also vulnerable to attacks and a target for others.

Land Claims – Although it is not proven, to build a permanent base legally, the players will need to purchase land claims.

Star Citizen 4.0.2 Pioneer

When will Base Building be implemented in the game?

As of version 4.0.2, base building is not available in Star Citizen but it is expected to be released this year with a major patch. Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) is currently focused on working out the details like:

  • Blueprints (how they are acquired, whether they are bought, found, or given as a reward)

  • Types of bases like military farms, homesteads, etc.

While the base building is not released yet, its foundations are being made and the building will likely be completed by the end of this year, although the final decision rests in the developer’s hands.

When will Pioneer be launched in the game?

Although the foundation for Pioneer was laid in 2017, its building development is still in process. As the key tech of building planetary outposts, this ship is expected to be introduced after the following have been released in Star Citizen:

Persistent Entity Streaming (PES) – This function ensures that the bases will stay in the world of the game even after the players have logged out. Although these bases are expected to require maintenance to function properly.

Server Meshing – Due to the base being heavy structures, the developers need to ensure that the servers do not get overloaded while supporting the bases built by players in their respective locations.

Resource Management & Crafting System – The necessary mechanics required for fabrication are still in development.

The official date is not out yet, the Pioneer is expected to come out after these functions are ready to be fully implemented but the final decision still rests in the hands of the developers.

Conclusion

When this patch is released, it's gonna be a game changer as this will be a major step towards player-driven content. Players can look forward to building their outposts in their desired locations. A lot of things are unclear as of now due to doubts existing about whether the bases are persistent enough to be safe from offline raids. It will be a nightmare for you to go to sleep in your newly made base and wake up to find half your base destroyed and your things stolen but as this whole thing is still in development, players can hope that their bases will last longer than their relationship.
