Originally scheduled for release in mid-June, Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers’ update 5.3 is being pushed back several weeks due to issues stemming from the covid-19 crisis.
One of the big changes set for patch 5.3 is a rework of the main story, which will condense the monstrously-long main quest of the original game into something a bit more reasonable for new players.
Now Japan has officially declared a state of emergency, so ongoing development is more difficult. Developers are working from home. Servers are being maintained remotely to keep the game running. Work in Japan continues, but slowly. And it’s not just about Japan. As Yoshida says in his letter, development on Final Fantasy XIV is a global effort. Lockdowns around the globe are affecting the delivery of graphical assets created in East Asia, North America, and Europe. Lockdowns in Europe are causing delays in recording the new voiceover for the update. There are many moving parts involved in creating a Final Fantasy XIV patch, and all of them are being slowed by the pandemic.
But here's the good news, Square Enix has now set a date to preview the upcoming content for their MMORPG. You'll want to make sure you've got your coffee or tea handy as the preview will be going live at 7 am EDT (4 am PDT) for those who want to catch the stream live. Also, note that if you tune into the stream live, the audio will be Japanese only.
While many of us worldwide remain inside our homes,” Yoshida says, “we should remember to let joy and laughter fill them – because in times like these, it’s especially important to find happiness where you can. I certainly hope that in delving into parts of FFXIV that you have yet to try – battles to be won, new jobs with which to hone your skills – connecting with in-game friends and having fun together, your days will seem a little brighter.
