Many players eager to jump into Final Fantasy XIV's highly anticipated Endwalker expansion have hit big queues since the game launched in early access on Friday. Part of the reason for the long waits is that the global chip shortage has prevented Square Enix from getting enough servers to handle demand, according to a blog post from producer and director Naoki Yoshida.
Since this summer, FFXIV's development team has been working on changes to improve the server congestion problem. The team took measures like increasing each server's maximum capacity for simultaneous logins and implementing an auto-logout feature that removes players from the game after 30 minutes of inactivity. While these measures helped somewhat, they didn't prevent players from frequently having to wait in long queues to log in - something that's been exacerbated by the launch of FFXIV: Endwalker.
Director Naoki Yoshida has announced that, as an apology for the congestion, players will be receiving a week of free FFXIV game time. He also shared some insight on the busiest times, so players can maximize their playing time. While this show of good faith is likely to go a long way in placating angry fans, a more permanent and long-term solution is necessary.
We have made considerable investment — even more so than usual — to secure the required hardware, but even so, a long lead time will be needed to prepare the server hardware," Yoshida said. The development team has taken a few measures to address things in the meantime such as optimizing server source code and upping maximum logins per world. Despite those efforts, " given the current situation, we anticipate that it may take several months or more to add new Worlds," he said.
Thankfully, there are some easy solutions to help pass the time while waiting for the queue in FFXIV. The most obvious of these, of course, is reading through the 6.0 patch notes for Endwalker. The full patch notes went live ahead of the new update, which means reading through them will give players a bit of a headstart before logging in to Endwalker. This is where fans can see where starting quests for the new Reaper and Sage jobs start, learn juicy new details on raids and dungeons, and look at screenshots of the newest minions, mounts, and glamour.
