World of Warcraft is one of the most famous MMORPGs ever released. The game came alive in 2004 and reached enormous success. In 2014, the game reached more than a hundred million registered accounts. By 2007, WoW grossed more than 9 billion dollars in revenue. The game still receives plenty of support from Blizzard and has eight expansions already released, with the ninth about to come as well.
Among all of these expansions, World of Warcraft fans and critics would attest that Wrath of the Lich King is one of the best. Released in 2008, the expansion pack sold almost 3 million copies only on the first day. And now, the trending news that Wrath of the Lich King is coming to WoW Classic surely left all the fans excited. After all, we will all be able to travel back to Northrend and live some of the most memorable encounters again.
But with the big release, an (old) new doubt arises: which class should I play? Thinking about those undecided players, MMO PIxel prepared a guide pointing out the best DPS classes to use in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic.

From DPS Specs to Equipment Dependence: The Metrics to Establish the Tier List
Wow Classic Wrath of the Lich King Best DPS Classes Divided by Tiers
You can play Wrath of the Lich King with several classes, and even choosing a class and creating a character can take from a few hours to more than one day. After all, you have an entire expansion of new information right ahead of you.
But no matter if you are just a casual player or extremely competitive, high damage meters is one of the things gamers will consider most. However, the damage output can’t be the only thing you take under consideration.
Some of the other factors directly related to damage you must consider are single target damage, cleave damage and AoE damage. Besides that, other important effects, such as buffs, which can give you a benefit, or debuffs, which do the contrary, are also significant. There’s also armor penetration and gear dependence. All of these factors interfere with the selection of the best DPS classes.
Where is the best place to buy Wotlk Classic Gold? You can visit a professional Wotlk Classic Gold selling shop MMOPixel.
Taking all of the important factors mentioned before under consideration, we divided some of the classes available in the Wrath of the lich King Classic. Here’s our DPS tier list.
Tier |
Class Specialization |
S Tier |
Frost Death Knight, Unholy Death Knight, Fire Mage, Affliction Warlock, Marksmanship Hunter, and Feral Druid |
A Tier |
Assassination Rogue, Combat Rogue, Demonology Warlock, Survival Hunter |
B Tier |
Retribution Paladin, Enhancement Shaman, Arcane Mage, Fury Warrior |
C Tier |
Arms Warrior, Destruction Warlock, Elemental Shaman |
D Tier |
Beast Mastery Hunter, Frost Mage, Subtlety Rogue, |
Now we have the classes divided into the tier list, we need to talk about them and justify the position each of them received.
We begin with the top tier. Any class here will offer the players the best DPS Specs and have far more than the average of damage a normal DPS class gives in the game.
One of the classes at the top of WotLK DPS rankings is the Frost Death Knight. They offer high and consistent damage right at the beginning of the game, in the earlier phases. This is important because most classes tend to suffer at this point, as they don’t have enough armor penetration, for instance.
These Death Knights also distinguish themselves for being easier than the unholy death knights. To complete, they have the improved icy talons, which give a buff on melee haste. Generally, melee classes like such things.

Chills your weapons with icy power, and quickly strikes the enemy with both weapons, dealing a total of (560% of weapon damage) Frost damage. |

|
Remorseless Winter |
Drains the warmth of life from all nearby enemies, dealing (280.8% of attack power) Frost damage over 8 sec and reducing their movement speed by 50%. |

|
Rime |
Your Obliterate has a 45% chance and Frostscythe has a 22.5% chance to cause your next Howling Blast to consume no runes and deal 300% additional damage. |
Their damage levels are very close to the Frost Death Knight. They also benefit from magical-based damage in the early stages, making them less dependent on armor penetration gear. Some players may find them harder to play compared to the Frost Death Knight class, but after you master them, you will deal even more damage.

Following the S tier classes, it is time to talk about the fire mages. This DPS class struggles in the early stages of the game as they need critical damage to increase their DPS spec. You will see that fire mages adapt easily, and since all types of DPS maters, they stand out, as they can give extremely high single target damage or AOE damage.

|
Combustion |

The Feral Druid surely deserves a position on this rank as they are one of the out-and-out classes of the game. Feral Druids have great DPS meters, can be off-tank, and also provide many buffs and utilities. They will need more armor penetration, as they are physical damage dealers and have to go on without this important stat in the early stages. Nothing that a better gear doesn’t solve.

Marksmanship Hunter presents problems in the early stage. Their damage meters rely on armor penetration, so you will need better gear to make them work, which may take time. But, after you are equipped, they prove to be a top DPS class. They have sustainable ranged damage, making them perfect for short fights or even for longer fights as well.

Trick Shots |

The last S-tier class is the Affliction Warlock. This is the strongest of all warlock classes and distinguishes itself for the damage over time it applies to enemies with their skills. When they get to the execute phase, new abilities, such as Drain Soul and Death’s Embrace help them deal lots of bonus damage. All of this would be enough to bring Affliction Warlocks to the top of the classic WoW Wrath of the Lich King tier list.

Going one tier down on our WotLK DPS rankings, we have other classes to analyze. These are not as good as those with S rank but are still pretty strong and will have high DPS charts.
We begin with a strong class but with some peculiarities. Assassination Rogues does well throughout the expansion. They tend to go well in the early phases because we have shorter fights compared to the available time combat takes. A Good assassination rogue will look for scaling with items and gear and will avoid long combat.

|
Vendetta |
Marks an enemy for death for 20 sec, increasing the damage your abilities and auto attacks deal to the target by 30%, and making the target visible to you even through concealments such as stealth and invisibility. |
On a general evaluation, the Combat Rogue is ahead of the assassination, but the difference isn’t big enough to justify a difference in tier lists. Apart from being stronger to deserve the A ranking (close to an S), combat rogues are fun to play, especially if you can unite a Combat Rogue with a DK, coordinating their skills.

|

The Demonology Warlocks fall a little behind the Affliction Warlocks when it comes to long and single-target combat. But the Metamorphosis ability ensures significant AoE damage, making the class stand out. Demonology Warlocks have some interesting buffs and set bonuses for spell casting classes in the party, which is also very helpful.

|
Summon Demonic Tyrant |
Summon a Demonic Tyrant to increase the duration of all of your current demons by 15.0 sec, and increase the damage of all of your other demons by 15% while damaging your target. |
Differently from other classes on these DPS rankings, Survival Hunters don’t suffer from a lack of penetration at the beginning of the expansion, which means they start with great stats. They have great single-target and AoE damage. But, as you advance throughout the expansion, you will see that several other classes scale better with gear, weapons, and other items. Another problem of the class is the lack of utility. So don’t expect a new ability of spell power buff or anything like it.

Now, we go one step down in our DPS rankings and get to the intermediary classes. From now, players may feel a bigger change in terms of damage and other stats. Mainly when we compare to those put in the S-tier. But this doesn’t mean you can’t start changing the course of any combat with the ranged or melee DPS these classes can give.
We begin with the Retribution Paladins. This spec brings high cleave damage potential, which is the best thing they can do in terms of DPS. Mind that their single-target damage isn’t the best, mainly when considering other specs listed on this tier list for Wrath of the Lich King. Besides that, Retribution Paladin is the only DPS Spec among paladins. These paladins distinguish themselves for the immense utility they bring to a party. They have a list of great utilities they share with some other classes.

|
Wake of Ashes |
Lashes out at your enemies, dealing (315% of Attack power) Radiant damage to all enemies within 12 yd in front of you and reducing their movement speed by 50% for 5 sec. Damage reduced on secondary targets. |
This class has great potential for DPS damage. The problem is that Enhancement Shaman is hard to use and master when compared to some specs in the tier list. So, we could say that the best Enhancement Shaman would take the class to an S-tier and is the kind of partner you want in a boss fight. A bad one could drop them to D or C-tier. Their skill rotation and ceiling are not simple to manage but increase the spec potential considerably.
They have Unleashed Rage, which they share with Marksmanship Hunters and Blood DKs. Besides that, they have a set of shaman totems and other utilities that will make your Wrath of the Lich King journey dar easier. If you like a challenge, this will be a fun class.
Generally, Arcane Mages are Fire Mages who want to avoid the complicated early stages they would have if they had gone through the fire way from the very beginning. Arcane Mages gain spell hits very early on classic WoTLK, which gives them good early damage. After that, this mage doesn’t scale as much as some specs.
They are easy to understand and master, though. Besides that, you have good utility with Arcane Empowerment, which you share with Beast Mastery Hunters and Retribution Paladins. A good Arcane Mage will prefer to go for small single-target fights.

Applies Touch of the Magi to your current target, accumulating 25% of the damage you deal to the target for 8 sec, and then exploding for that amount of Arcane damage to the target and reduces damage to all nearby enemies. |
Following, we get to the Fury Warrior. The class has good overall damage. The main problem Fury Warriors face is lack of damage and attack power in the early stages of Wrath Classic, which will give problems in most fights.
After some scale and weapon gathering, a Fury Warrior will be great for many fights. Their single-target damage and cleave damage are significant. On the other hand, their AoE damage isn’t the best thing to rely on.

This class suffered from a lack of damage but received some buffs, and some problems Shadow Priests faced in the early days of Classic WoW have passed. Abilities such as Vampiric Touch helped a lot. Now, users have a class that doesn’t impress in terms of AoE and Cleave damage but does great in terms of single-target.

|
Voidform |
Activated by casting Void Eruption. Twists your Shadowform with the powers of the Void, increasing spell damage you deal by 20%, granting an additional charge of Mind Blast, and refreshing Mind Blast's cooldown. |
Leaving the middle of the pack, we start to get to those classes that present worse values in terms of DPS. A spec on this tier is far from the top-notch, such as Frost DKs, for example, but still pretty good for other things in the Wrath Classic expansion, so use their power the right way. Competitive players may prefer to go for one of the specs listed above.
If we were talking about a raid tier, this class would have a better position. Arms Warriors are useful not because of Single-Target or AoE damage but because of the number of buffs and debuffs they can apply and their two target cleave damage, which is good but not incredible.
They suffer at the beginning of the Wrath Classic expansion and are easily outperformed later, giving no real compensation in terms of DPS. Some of the valuable skills they can use to help stronger specs are

|
Bladestorm |
Become an unstoppable storm of destructive force, striking all targets within 8 yards for (1099% of weapon damage) Physical damage over 6 sec. |
The class has balanced stats when it comes to DPS damage. But the biggest problem they present during the gameplay is that they don’t excel in pretty much anything. These Shamans have a moderate number of single-target, AoE, and Cleave damage. They don’t suffer as some specs do during the beginning of WotLK expansion, at least. This class is more recommended to experienced players, who will know how to perform better even with the flaws they present.

|

Calls down a bolt of lightning, dealing (41.79% of spell power) Nature damage to all enemies within 10 yards, reducing their movement speed by 40% for 5 sec, and knocking them away from the Shaman. Usable while stunned. |
We finally get to the last step, to present the specs with the lowest damage in the WotLK Expansion. Each spec we are about to show has big flaws in terms of damage and is extremely conditional in any fight. You can go for any of them and see that they may present other qualities that will make the gameplay fun.
We begin with the Beast Mastery Hunter. The worst thing about this spec is that the damage they have is extremely dependent on their pet. If it dies, your damage disappears. Besides that, you shouldn’t expect anything special in terms of AoE, single-target, or Cleave damage. This is the worst spec among all hunters. Still, they have some skills that can help a party with some utility.

|

|
Exotic Beasts |

Following in the worst tier, we have the Frost Mages. This class is only useful in PvP situations and it would not be absurd to say they have the worst damage in the entire Wrath of the Lich King Expansion. Some could say the class offers some interesting buffs, which is true. But the thing is that several specs can offer the same buffs and give more damage as well, so there is practically no reason to go for Frost Mages.

Frostbolt |
Launches a bolt of frost at the enemy, causing (51.1% of Spell power) Frost damage and slowing movement speed by 50% for 8 sec. |
|
Ice Lance |
Quickly flings a shard of ice at the target, dealing (37.8% of spell power) Frost damage. |
|
Summon Water Elemental |

Frostbolt has a 15% chance and Frozen Orb damage has a 10% to grant a charge of Fingers of Frost. |
|

|
Frozen Orb |
Launches an orb of swirling ice up to 40 yards forward which deals up to (325.4% of spell power) Frost damage to 8 enemies it passes through. Grants 1 charge of Fingers of Frost when it first damages an enemy. |
And we finally get to the end of the list with the Subtlety Rogues. This class is only useful in PvP situations, and we hardly recommend it in any other condition. SubtletyRogues offer buffs that, once again, are not good, and only when we consider the other possible rogues.
They have Hemorrhage skill, that is unique. Besides that, they have Tricks of the Trade, which all the other rogues have as well. Once again, this is a very situational spec, so go for something else if you want to deal DPS damage.

In World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, different classes can fill the role of DPS. While some classes are better than others at DPS, the reality is that any class can be viable if played well. However, some classes are definitely better suited for DPS than others.
We hope that our list has provided you with a snapshot of the current state of balance among the classes and helped you choose a main or alt (secondary character) based on your desired playstyle. Thanks for reading!
