World of Warcraft: Wrath of The Lich King Classic is up and running, so we’re here to help you with all your WotLK Classic needs! In this guide, we’re going through a leveling guide for Paladins, one of the most popular classes in the whole World of Warcraft World.
Those beasts are universal, as they can pose as a strong and heavy tank or be used as a healer or just a DPS specialist. It’s an all-around class with lots and lots of stuff to be the best like no one ever was.
The return of the classic World of Warcraft brings us back the fan-favorite paladin with lots of new elements, an easy and fast leveling program, and just an overall great experience once more for solo and group experience. Are you excited? Well, we sure are. That’s why we’re not wasting any more time and dive right into our Paladin leveling guide - Classic WotLK edition!
Right from the start - we need to add a disclaimer first. There are three specs for you to choose from - Protection, Holy, and Retribution. Aura surely shows us that there is only one good choice to get into some serious end game. And it’s Retribution.
That is why we’re going to focus on that part of grinding, as it is, indeed, the best out of the three. Of course, most of the tips in this guide will be available for other playstyles as well, but we felt like focusing on all of them would be a massive waste of time and space.
We’ll speak a little about those at the end of this article, so - stay tuned!
The basic idea of leveling as a Paladin is to really use everything you have at your disposal. The idea is that even though some Paladin skills may feel like they are not the best of them all, they can be used in many different situations and are, in the end, pretty useful.
Here, we’ll talk about what you should invest your talent points in, how to gain some natural mana regeneration and how to hit multiple enemies with a weapon swing. Let’s get started.
Auras are considered one of the less important skills of a Paladin, but you should not treat them lightly. It’s a great way to reduce the damage intake and can really help you out in some dire situations.
As we’ve stated in the beginning, it’s really important to check out many things about your Paladin skills, and learn to use them in situations where they’re most needed.
The most important thing to understand about the Paladin is that your damage output does not come from your spells or your power, but mostly from your weapon. If you want to level fast, you’ll need to upgrade your equipment rather than go for the spells.
The same goes for the armor. Make sure to use the best one available for you at your level. It will highly increase your leveling speed. You can use Cloth, then Leather, Mail, and Plate Armor at level 40. The main difference is the damage output.
Mail or Plate are great for defense, and Leather has the highest damage output. As always, you do you, so feel free to choose what’s right for you.
Now, let’s talk about abilities.
This enhances your damage output based on weapon damage. The best thing to pair it with is some slow and big weapon with big damage. You can choose from many two-handed weapons out there and surely pick something for yourself.
Those three abilities are the most important tools in your damage output arsenal. They deal damage based on what kind of seals you have active. Whether it’s a Seal of Righteousness or a Seal of Command, it’s really your choice to make. We’ll speak more about them further in the article.
Let’s start with Judgment of Light. The main concept is that every attack against an enemy gives you a chance of healing 2% of your max health. It’s the first one you learn and after learning others, you’ll quickly give up on it.
Judgment of Justice makes your target unable to flee while it's active. It has its uses when you really want to chain an enemy to a spot and destroy them in that place.
Then you have Judgment of Wisdom. This one is probably the most important of them all. If you use it, every attack has a chance of restoring 2% of your base mana. It’s great, especially if you have a lot of mana-based attacks or defenses. And Paladin really has a lot of them.
These two can really help you in a tight spot where there are many enemies, and you need something quick to reduce some damage. Use them also to gain some time to heal yourself.
You really want this on at all times. It not only allows you to kill your enemies faster but also you will use less mana while doing so.
Seals are buffs that can last 30 minutes and add a bonus to your attacks and Judgment spells. Seal of Righteousness is a skill you get at the start of the game, and it adds some Holy Damage to your every melee attack and deals Holy Damage with a Judgment.
But you really want to get as quickly as you can to level 20, so that you can gain access to Seal of Command. This one will stay with you for the game. What does it do? Well, it just adds up to three targets to your every melee swing. So it’s an AoE attack. Every attack. Period.
As a Paladin, you need to have appropriate stats distribution to level the fastest way possible. Here is how you should go about it.
Stat |
Description |
Strength |
Most important stat gives you a +2 attack with every point. You can pretty much always put some point in there, and you’ll be ok. |
Attack Power |
This increases the damage you deal with your abilities. Also, it increases your Spell Power with Sheath of Light. |
Critical Strike Rating |
As the title suggests, it increases your chance of a critical hit. If you use some big weapons, it’s a must-add as those big ones with critical hits deal some massive damage. |
Haste Rating |
Increases the speed of your attacks. It’s important but not the most. It’s rather an addition than the main focus. |
Hit Rating |
Increases the chance of hitting the target. You will always feel bad not to add to it enough but you will never get the chance really. |
Agility |
Increases critical strike chance. Not really that important as it does it only slightly. |
Stamina |
Increases maximum health. Really cool in theory but terrible in practice, as most of your gear will probably give you some incredible bonuses, so you’ll never use this one. |
Spell Power |
Increases Spell Power. Useless. |
Intellect |
As sad as we’re about it, you shouldn’t really invest in intellect as Palladin. It increases your maximum mana and critical chance with heals. Not really a Paladin-Esque stat. |
Spirit |
Increases out-of-combat mana regeneration. Useless. |
The rotation in Paladin is not as important as in other classes, but it’s pretty significant after all, so we’ll go over it.
If you’re not familiar with the term, rotation is simply the sequence of skills you press to get the most out of every attack and skill. In Paladin, it’s really - clicks on everything that cooled down, but there are some things that feel more important than others.
The first thing you want to do as a Paladin is to start your Aura, Blessing, and be sure you have a Seal.
As we’ve stated before, the best ones to use are Seal of Command, Blessing of Might and, that was not mentioned, Retribution Aura. It causes X Holy damage to any enemy that strikes a party or raid member within 40 yards. So it’s pretty powerful in those circumstances. If you have all of that, here’s how rotation should go:
There are many talents for you to get as a Retribution Paladin. Retribution talents are very important to get as fast as you can, so be sure to choose the most important ones before getting something you may feel is cool. Here are the key ones.
Talent |
Description |
Level |
Seal of Command |
One of the most important ones, get it while you can, you really need it for leveling. |
20 |
Judgments of the Wise |
Increases mana efficiency, get it straight away. |
40 |
The Art of War |
Very important, you can instantly cast Flash of Light and Exorcism with it. |
43 |
Crusader Strike |
Very important in rotation. 110% weapon damage and refreshes all Judgements on the target. |
50 |
Sheath of Light |
So good! You can convert all your Attack Power into Spell Power, giving you some amazing powerful spells. |
51 |
Divine Storm |
AoE attack is always good to have. |
60 |
After finishing with the Retribution tree, go for Protection.
Glyphs add to your leveling but you may not always get your hands on them. If you find something cheap in the Auction House, definitely get it. Those are the most interesting ones.
Glyph |
Description |
Glyph of Judgement |
Judgements deal 10% more damage |
Glyph of Consecration |
Increases the duration and cooldown of your Consecration by 2-seconds |
Glyph of Exorcism |
Increase the damage of Exorcism by 20% |
Glyph of Holy Wrath |
Reduces the cooldown of Holy Wrath by 15-seconds |
Glyph of Seal of Command |
You gain 8% of your base mana whenever you use a Judgement with Seal of Command active |
Glyph |
Description |
Glyph of Sense Undead |
Deal 1% increased damage to Undead while Sense Undead is active |
Glyph of Lay on Hands |
Reduces the cooldown of Lay on HandsLay on Hands by 5-minutes |
Glyph of Blessing of Might |
Your Blessing of Might will last 20-minutes longer when you cast it on yourself |
Of course, the right choice of skills is not the only thing that will get you ahead in the pursuit of becoming the best Paladin in the World of Warcraft. There is plenty of other stuff you need to take into consideration when leveling up.
As we’ve stated in the beginning, Paladins have a lot of dependence on what kind of equipment they use, so it’s really important to choose the right one. It is a class that surrounds itself with additional elements, so we’re going to also look at some of the more interesting elements in that department. Here you can check it out in more detail.
Class quests are really interesting in that they grant you experience and often get you items and weapons. Here’s what you can get from them:
Quest |
Description |
Redemption |
You can get it from your Paladin trainer at Level 12. It’s basically “go there, do this, go back and then go somewhere else.” You can learn how to resurrect friendly targets in the process if you want to do something like this. And you probably don’t. |
Blood-Tempered Raneseur |
It’s a chain of quests that you can start with The Second Trial. It’s exclusive to Blood Elves. It’s basically fighting different Paladins in Silvermoon City, Azeroth, Blackfathom Deeps, Shadowfang Keep, and Ragefire Chasm. After you finish it, you’ll get a Sin-dorei Warblade - a weapon that you probably got somewhere else. It’s a fun little quest but not really groundbreaking. |
Verigan’s Fist |
It’s pretty much the same, but you can only do it as an Alliance Paladin. The first quest in the chain is Tome of Valor that you can get from your local Paladin trainer. You’ll have to go through Loch Modan, Westfall, Blackfathom Deeps, Shadowfang Keep, and The Deadmines. In the end, you get a hammer which is not that impressive, especially considering that you get Arced War Axe and Strike of the Hydra in the dungeons you’ll have to do before finishing the quest. |
Sunken Temple Quest |
You get it at level 50. Alliance Paladins get Lightforged Blade, Chivalrous Signet, or Sanctified Orb. Choose what you need. If you’re a Blood Elf Paladin, you get Scourgebane as a quest reward. |
And here we are, at last, at the most important of stops - equipment. Paladins are able to use a wide variety of weapons, like Axes, Swords, Maces, and Polearms. There really isn’t any best weapon category out there, to be honest, so choose what’s best for you at the moment.
The main idea you must abide by while choosing your best weapons is finding something with the highest damage output. The damage per second stat does not really matter in the end. As we’ve stated many times before, your damage output is based on and scaled from your weapon's damage, so the higher it gets, the higher you strike.
When it comes to armor, on the other hand, similarly to what we’ve stated before, you have to decide what kind of Paladin you want to be. Are you more into defending? Well, then definitely choose a plate armor at level 40 and just forget about it.
If you’re more into attacking the other hand, choose leather, as it gives you much better stats, but you will die sooner for sure.
Here are some of the best weapons in the game.

As always, if you get one thing, be sure to get another. That is what leveling Paladin is all about. It turns out that stacking buffs in the case of a Paladin is one of the best ways to go about it. Paladins can really use Professions to their benefit.
The most important is definitely Blacksmithing at first glance, but it’s really hard to get it up and going as a Paladin. It’s much easier to get into something like Mining or Herbalism. You don’t really do it for yourself, but you can sell it and get something in return in the Auction House.
Some Professions give you additional boosts, so remember to choose wisely. These are some of the more important ones. If you’re into making your own equipment, and Paladins often are - Mining and Skinning would be really good for you.
Profession |
Effect |
Mining |
Toughness - a passive boost to your Stamina, starting with 3 Stamina at 75 Mining, and ending at 60 Stamina at 450 Mining. |
Skinning |
Master of Anatomy - passive boost to your Critical Strike Rating, starting with 3 Critical Strike Rating at 75 Skinning, and ending at 40 Critical Strike Rating at 450 Skinning. |
Herbalism |
Lifeblood - instant cast heal-over-time on a 3-minute cooldown. This scales with both Herbalism and your maximum health. |
Engineering |
You can grenades and bombs, target dummies and fireworks. |
Alchemy |
You can craft your own potions, flasks, and elixirs. |
So, let’s summarize what we’ve been able to understand about this class. There are many pros and cons to it and here we are to tell you all about it.
Let’s start with the Pros:
Cons:
As we’ve promised, we’ve also prepared a little quick-guide on how to level the Holy Paladin. Here’s how it should look if you want to do it 100% correctly. Of course, you can do some tweaks here and there, but it’s essentially this build that will give you the biggest advantage over other players.
The best rotation for Holy Paladin looks a little bit like this:
And here how the Protection Paladin development should look like. As you can see, Protection Paladins dabble in some Retribution, so you can sometimes switch between those two, especially in the early game. Late game though - it’s all about Protection.
Here’s how your rotation should look like.
Last but not least, if you want to reach the maximum level quickly, develop the best race and participate in PvP and PvE as the best warrior of Azeroth, then you need to acquire the WotLK Classic Gold for Sale we have on MMOPixel. Get your Gold and purchase all the resources you need to achieve victory!
Paladin is a great class that allows you to truly be the slayer you’ve always wanted to be. The main concept is really simple - just go around and smash everything until it breaks. And repeat that every single time and opportunity you get. It may not be the most sophisticated way of doing stuff, but it’s definitely the most fun!
Paladins are recommended for beginners and advanced players as well because of their great versatility. You can play some basic Paladin with a big weapon that just goes around and smash stuff, but you can also try something more interesting with many different abilities and talents to choose from.
