New World Damage Types, Critical Chance and Weaknesses

New World is an MMORPG released by Amazon Games in September of 2021. It is the first Amazon Entry in this Universe and their first attempt to implement some big changes in the MMO genre. New World has some incredible features that make lots of players addicted to the game.

MMOPixels prepares lots of guides, tips, and information for you about this and other MMOs, so you can always be ahead of the game. As we cover everything you need to know about New World, here comes the time to talk about New World’s damage mechanics.

How Does Damage Work in New World

New World’s damage mechanics consist of many factors determining how much damage a hit or attack deals. Some of these factors are weapon damage, weapon’s damage type, gems, enemy type resistance, enemies weaknesses, critical hit chance, and character attributes.

If you need them, you can buy New World Gold Coins on our website MMOPixel at an unbeatable price.

Damage Types: Physical or Elemental Damage

One of the most important things to clarify is that there are two different New World damage types: elemental damage and physical damage. Physical damage can be divided into three different categories. Meanwhile, elemental damage is divided into six of them.

Physical Damage

Elemental Damage

Slash

Arcane

Thrust

Fire

Strike

Ice

Lightning

Nature

Void

Many things can interfere with the type of damage a weapon or attack gives. For instance, if you add a specific gem to a weapon limited to physical damage, it can start to give secondary fire elemental damage, secondary nature elemental damage, or secondary ice elemental damage, for instance. It all depends on your mix with your physical or elemental damage.

Weapons and Damages

Certain weapons give specific types of damage. In case of physical damage, all the weapons have their kind of damage. The game also features the division into melee weapon classes, ranged weapon class, and magical weapon class. Also, you can make a heavy attack or a light attack. Both have different damages and modifiers.

•Slash Damage: Axes, Hatchets, Rapiers, Swords

Thrust Damage: Bows, Muskets Rapiers, Spears Swords

Strike Damage: War Hammers

Critical Hit Chances and Modifiers

Another very important thing you should mind is the critical damage modifier and critical hit chances. First, the critical hit chance determines the chances of each weapon or attack being critical. No matter if you are using physical damage or elemental damage, all of them can be crit. A critical hit gives amplified damage to enemies.

Second, the critical damage modifier determines the extra damage of each critical hit. All weapons and attacks have different values and, therefore, give different damage amounts. Some weapons and attacks can also have guaranteed critical hit features, as the ranged weapons do. Below, you see a chart with crit chances for each weapons class.

Enemy’s Resistance and Weaknesses

Until now, we have seen what the different types of damage and their critical chances are. But, besides that, there is also the weakness of each enemy. Besides New World damage types, you should be prepared to take only the weapons and gear that each enemy will be weak against to battle. The enemies you’ll find in New World are:

•Ancients

Angry Earth

Corrupted

The Lost

Beasts

As you can see, all the enemies in New World are divided into five categories. Each class has its resistance. Here’s a list of enemy type resistances and resistant damage values and weakness damage values for every enemy type. However, neutral damage values are not displayed. Check the enemy type’s resistances below.

Ancients

Weak Against: Strike (+20%), Void (+15%), and Lightning (+30%)

Resistant Against: Slash (-20%) and Fire (-40%)

Angry Earth

Weak Against: Slash (+20%) and Fire (+30%)

Resistant Against: Thrust (-15%) and Lightning (-40%)

Corrupted

Weak Against: Thrust (+20%), Nature (+15%), and Arcane (+30%)

Resistant Against: Strike (-15%) and Ice (-40%)

The Lost

Weak Against: Strike (+10%), Ice (+15%), and Nature (+30%)

Resistant Against: Thrust (-15%) and Void (-40%)

Beasts

Weak Against Thrust (+20%)

Resistant Against None

Secondary and Primary Damage Type

Some weapons can give different New World damage types based on the perks you add to them. Also, some weapons do it naturally, without perks. One example is the sword. When using light attacks, you give slash damage. However, when using a heavy attack, you inflict thrust damage as your secondary physical damage type, using it instead of your primary physical damage type

On the other hand, some weapons have a primary elemental damage type. They also can be equipped with perks to win a secondary elemental damage type. For example, the chain lightning perk can be used to deal lightning elemental damage type. Always remember to check the elemental damage type icon to see which kind of damage you’re dealing to your foes.

Combining different damage types to match resistances and weaknesses will surely help you defeat enemies easier by changing your damage output. It can also turn a weak weapon into a strong one, from which you can take advantage.

Other important Information to Consider

There are some other important things to be mindful of when discussing New World damage. First, when dealing damage, you will see a floating damage counter number with the damage value. Through this, you will be able to know exactly how much damage you're dealing with an enemy.

Also, remember you can give granted a critical attack at the beginning of each fight. For ranged weapons, going for the enemy’s head will crit. To complete, you can always backstab an unsuspecting enemy. This backstab in stationary enemies will grant you another crit.

To complete, remember that the weaknesses and strengths of an enemy will be displayed on your screen. To confirm if any of your damage types are effective against an enemy, check for the double arrows pointing upwards. These small arrows will indicate the certain damage types you are using are effective against that foe. Remember that the strengths and weaknesses system may not apply to PvP enemies.
