What Is the Cooking Profession in the World of Warcraft?

Ogre in World of Warcraft eating something from the pan

To keep things simple – it’s a secondary skill. You can add it to your arsenal of abilities, and it does not matter what kind of other professions you have. It’s something many players use, as it provides you with the ability to create food that impacts your stats and give it to your teammates for some extra boost.

It’s one of the most basic and universal professions in World of Warcraft, definitely recommended for development. On the top levels, you can also do feasts, where you can eat a big meal with your party that will give you some unique abilities and get your mana and health bars to the maximum.

Cooking in WoW: Wrath of the Lich King – What Changed?

World of Warcraft - The Lich King stands on the top of the mountain

As usual, Wrath of the Lich King content is only available when completing the vanilla version and The Burning Crusade Classic. We will walk you through all of these in a moment.

Additionally, some changes to the Cooking profession are unique for the WotLK.

The biggest difference between what we’ve seen so far and Wrath of the Lich King is how you get the Cooking recipes. You can get some basics in training, but those will not get you very far, as they are mostly some plain and simple recipes that will replenish your health or whatnot.

You can get something more interesting in World Drops. In the case of WotLK Classic, the biggest difference is the idea of Epicurean’s Awards. By acquiring those, you can get the best recipes in the game. More on this later.

Additionally, creating a Basic Campfire does not require reagents anymore. It has a 5-minute cooldown now.

Also – in this expansion, you can get the Chef’s Hat that speeds up cooking. You can get it through Epicurean’s Awards (it costs 100 of them) from the vendors in Dalaran. Plus, if you’re a part of Alliance, you can visit Derek Odds in the Hero’s Welcome Inn. If you’re in the Horde, find Misensi in the Filthy Animal Inn.

Epicurean’s Award

Cooking in World of Warcraft

So, what are those Epicurean Awards we were talking about? Well, they are cooking tokens that you can get for various activities. There are daily cooking quests to complete, and by doing so, you get an Epicurean’s Award to buy cooking recipes. Those can be found in all faction’s capitals. Dalaran cooking awards are there as well.

The concept is simple, one daily will give you one token, but some can get you two. As it’s better to use the double award, here are their names and where you can find them:

Alliance

Ribs for the Sentinels (Darnassus),  Keepin' the Haggis Flowin' (Ironforge),  Feeling Crabby? (Stormwind)

Horde

Everything Is Better with Bacon (Orgrimmar),  Corn Mash (Thunder Bluff),  Roach Coach (Undercity)

Dalaran

Mustard Dogs!/Mustard Dogs!

Cooking – Training

Two fireplaces in World of Warcraft

As in most professions cases, here you also need to find someone to teach you cooking if you want to get ahead. That will allow you to get the best recipes fast. It will also provide some exquisite buffs to help you during raids.

Place

Trainer

Materials

Old World

To get through every profession to the Artisan level, you just need to visit the capitals. For some recipes, though, it is just not sufficient enough, so if you’re not getting it straight away – look in Stormwind if you’re in Alliance or Orgrimmar/Thunder Bluff if you’re in Horde.

60x Simple Flour

60x Mild Spices

40 – 70x Bear Meat or Stringy Wolf Meat

15 – 30x Clam Meat

30x Refreshing Spring Water

15 – 30x Crawler Meat

30 – 45x Crawler Claw

40x Dig Rat

50x Raptor Egg

50x Raptor Flesh

25x Giant Egg

40x Bear Flank

15x Sandworm Meat

Outland

This one is pretty straightforward. Go through the Dark Portal and find a trainer. Alliance has Gaston in Honor Hold, Horde has Baxter in Thrallmar.

30x Ravager Flesh or Buzzard Meat

35x Talbuk Venison or Clefthoof Meat

Northrend

The highest possible level of Grand Master can be found, similarly to the previous point, in the first questing area of the expansion. If you’re a part of the Alliance, check out Rollick MacKreel in Valiance Keep. In the case of Horde, find Orn Tenderhoof in Warsong Hold.

20x Chilled Meat

13 – 15x Rhino Meat

50 – 60x Tundra Berries

25 – 30x Savory Snowplum

> 35x Northern Spices

Dalaran

Here, it’s completely different from what you may have known so far. It’s usually the same person for all factions in Dalaran when it comes to training. Well, there are two in this case.

For Alliance players, it’s Katherine Lee.

Horde, on the other hand, will have to find Awilo Lon’gomba.

There is one neutral cooking trainer, though, you can find it at the Argent Tournament Grounds, and it’s Bethany Cromwell.

Cooking – Leveling

Kitchen in World of Warcraft

It’s only fair to also mention the power leveling aspect of Cooking. Trainers may teach you a lot of Cooking skills, but only with your hard work and dedication can you achieve something incredible! Anyways, onto the list! There are some differences between Alliance and Horde when it comes to the cooking as those two probably eat different stuff, so the table gets split into some parts to adjust for those differences.

Old World

1-40

Spice Bread

Combine Simple Flour and Mild Spices.

40 – 80

Smoked Bear Meat or Spiced Wolf Meat

You can use either Bear Meat or Spice Meat, although we highly recommend getting the Smoked Bear Meat recipe from an NPC as it is much faster to accomplish. You can get it from Andrew Hilbert at The Sepulcher in Silverpine Forest or Drac Roughcut, Thelsamar in Loch Modan.

50

Journeyman Cooking

At level 50, you can find a trainer and learn Journeyman Cooking.

80-130 [Alliance]

Boiled Clams and Crab Cake

Combine Clam Meat and Refreshing Spring Water or Crawler Meat to make Boiled Clams or Crab Cakes. Remember that at level 85, you can make Cooked Crab Claw from a recipe sold by Kendor Kabonka in Stormwind. They also have Curiously Tasty Omelet that can come in handy further in the game. [For Horde Players – Keena at Hammerfall in Arathi Highlands or Nerrist at Grom’gol Base Camp in Stranglethorn Vale has this recipe. While being there – get Recipe: Roast Raptor as well].

80 – 90 [Horde]

Smoked Bear Meat

Same thing as before.

90-130 [Horde]

Dig Rat Stew

Cook Dig Rat into Dig rat Stew. You can get the Dig rat Stew Recipe by completing the Dig Rat Stew quest that you can get from Grub near Crossroads. Or you can just buy it.

125

Expert Cooking

At 125, you can learn Expert Cooking from a trainer.

130 – 175

Curiously Tasty Omelet

Cook Raptor Egg into Curiously Tasty Omelet.

175-225

Roast Raptor

Turn Roast Raptor Flesh into Roast Raptor. If you don’t have this recipe, here is where you can get it:

  • Keena and Nerrist, as we’ve stated before

  • Ogg'marr in Brackenwall Villages, Dustwallow Marsh for Horde Players

  • Corporal Bluth, Rebel Camp, Stranglethorn Vale for the Alliance Players

  • Hammon Karwn Refuge Pointe, Arathi Highlands for the Alliance Players

  • Helenia Olden, Theramore Isle, Dustwallow Marsh for the Alliance Players

225

Artisan Cooking

At Level 225 you can find a trainer and learn Artisan Cooking. After getting this one, remember to get Monster Omelet Recipe. You will have to go to Felwood or Winterspring to do so.

  • Felwood – (A) – Malygen south of Felpaw Village; (H) – Bale in Adenar

  • Winterspring – Himmik (B)

225 – 250

Monster Omelet

Cook Giant Egg into Monster Omelet

250 – 285

Juicy Bear Burger

Turn Bear Flank into Juicy Bear Burger.

285 – 300

Smoked Desert Dumplings

Cook Sandworm Meat into Smoked Desert Dumplings.

Outland

Cooking in Outland starts with a choice. You can either get the Ravager Dog Recipe or Buzzard Bites. You can get the first one if you complete the Smooth as Butter in Southern Hellfire Peninsula. To get the second one, go to Sid Limbardi in Honor Hold if you’re a part of Alliance and to Cookie One-Eye in Thrallmar if you’re in the Horde. You can also get both, no problem with that.

300

Master Cooking

At level 300, you can go through Dark Portal and find a trainer to learn Master Cooking.

300 – 325

Ravager Dog or Buzzard Bites

Cook either Ravager Flesh or Buzzard Meat into Ravager Dogs or Buzzard Bites.

325 – 350

Talbuk Steak or Roasted Clefthoof

Convert Talbuk Venison or Clefthoof Meat into Talbuk Steak or Roasted Clefthoof. To get this, you’ll need to find the Talbuk Steak or Roast Clefthoof recipes in Nagrand. You can buy it from Nula the Butcher in Garadar if you’re a part of the Horde or from Uriku in Telaar if you’re in the Alliance.

Northrend

350

Grand Master Cooking

After finishing leveling in the Outlands, you can go to Northrend, find a trainer and learn Grand Master Cooking.

350 – 365

Northern Stew

Cook Chilled Meat into Northern Stew. To do so, you need to complete the Northern Cooking quest. It differs depending on what part of the conflict you’re in. You just need to get the meat to create Northern Stew, and that’s it.

365 – 375

Rhino Dogs

Convert Rhino Meat into Rhino Dogs.

375 – 400

Kungaloosh

Ferment Tundra Berries and Savory Snowplum to make Kungaloosh. To get this recipe, you’ll need to finish the quest. Firstly, you need to speak with Grimbooze Thunderbrew. They will give you Some Make Lemonade, Some Make Liquor quest. This will lead to learning the Kungaloosh recipe after completing The Taste Test. You can also sell it at the Auction House.

400 – 425

Any of the recipes learned from trading in Dalaran Cooking Award

In this latter stage of leveling Cooking, the whole process gets much slower. You’ll need to complete a quest chain to do so. You can learn cooking by getting a Dalaran Cooking Award, which is a reward for completing those. You can trade those for recipes.

  • Dalaran –  [A] trade them into Derek Odds; [H] go to Misensi; [B] Mera Mistrunner at the Argent Tournament Grounds

Daily Quests for Cooking Awards are:

  • Cheese for Glowergold

  • Convention at the Legerdemain

  • Infused Mushroom Meatloaf

  • Mustard Dogs!

  • Sewer Stew

All of them require getting Northern Spices that you can find in the Daily Quest reward bag that you can trade for 1 Cooking Award or just buy it.

425 – 450

Small Feast/Gigantic Feast

You can achieve this leveling by doing a couple of things. Firstly – you can just go with the whole daily quest leveling that we’ve done so far and it will lead you straight to the 450. It is probably the longest way to achieve it.

The second option is purchasing Small Feast or Giganti Feast. You’ll need to get some more tokens to do so, but it’s manageable.

Cooking and Fishing

Fishing in World of Warcraft

Although it’s a Cooking leveling guide to go with, you can be leveling fishing at the same time as you level your cooking abilities. It’s really a great opportunity if you’re trying to level both of them and get to Grand Master Levels with them. They may be secondary professions but are quite useful if they’re on higher levels. You can purchase recipes or go with some professional trainers as well if you will.

Old World

Wrath of The Lich King Cooking Guide Conclusion

Cooking dailies, worm meat and much, much more – here we’ve passed onto you the essential knowledge about this profession. It’s probably one of the most missed out on professions on the profession market.

You can do so much with it when it comes to the raids, as it shines through when putting up a group of some serious players. They will all demand a feast before heading out for sure, and you can be the one providing it for them.

The amount of buffs you get from making a gigantic feast is significant, and it can impact your endgame result. For sure, it is one of the more interesting ways to improve your performance and get a better immersive experience out of this.
